Chelsea Townhouse, London, for Patalab Architects, June 2024
A four bedroom townhouse in Chelsea was being completely redesigned by Patalab Architects, with an extra floor added, and bold new architectural details. The architects approached us to source the art; their end client knew they wanted to support emerging artists, but needed some expertise to guide them.
From the outset, we knew the art had to work with the exceptional design of the property, to elevate the space without dominating. The energy and diversity of the London streets are a consistent part of our inspiration, of course, but here we rooted our inspo closer to home, playing on the unique details that were present in the house. Our final art selection was chosen to provide richness and texture without overwhelming the space. The artworks definitely feel present, at times they are bold, but the conscious curation of subtle shapes throughout means that there is a balance and refinement. As always, we ensured our curation was a diverse mix of artists, both from the UK and abroad.
We worked directly with the architects throughout. We knew Patalab were serious art lovers, so we provided a much wider selection of art than usual, and had fun in narrowing it down! We planned the art collection while the whole house was a building site. This could have been a challenge, but they provided us with detailed elevations, photos and visualisations, which helped enormously. The art was ready to be installed at the end of the project. We supplied full instructions for hanging the works, so the client could use their own contractor and save the cost of a specialist art technician. As usual, the brilliant team at The Framing Room in South London provided immaculate framing.
Both clients were delighted with the art collection; our end clients telling us “you certainly made wonderful choices. We love everything you chose”.
We certainly enjoyed bringing these artists to their beautiful home:
Sam Parsons
Nadia Nizamudin
Laura Segan
Jenny Woods
Emily Knight

"It was a great joy to collaborate with Subject Matter on behalf of our clients. There was much ease in selecting the pieces through a shared passion for interior spaces and design, and with the trust of Kitty and Liezel's knowledge. It also feels special to support young talented artists who express their diverse backgrounds through their artworks. We hope to work together on another project soon."
